Although Jujutsu Kaisen had a record-breaking start with $9.37 million (previews included) on its opening day in the Japanese Box Office and saw the second-biggest opening day for a Japanese film ever with 772,224 admissions. As of now, it seems a bit unlikely that Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 will surpass Evangelion in the box office, especially with the current spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 and the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home in the Japanese Box Office this week having emerged as a big obstacle on Jujutsu Kaisen’s course to become the Best-Performing Anime Movie of 2021.

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 saw the Second-Biggest Opening Weekend Ever in the Japanese Box Office.

Jujutsu Kaisen made over $23.5 million in 418 theatres during its first weekend, making it the second-biggest opening weekend for a movie in the Japanese Box Office, only behind Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train made a whopping $44 million in the Japanese Box Office over the three-day weekend period as it saw 3.42 million admissions.

The movie was initially projected to make around $85-95 million at the domestic box office. But after the massive Box Office numbers for its first weekend, it was said that the movie could even break the $110 million mark at the Japanese Box Office.

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 saw 1.908 million admissions during its first weekend. The movie currently has a rating of 4.1 on Filmarks.

The prequel story follows Yuuta Okkotsu, who is literally haunted by the ghosts of his past. Ever since his childhood friend Rika died in a traffic accident, her ghost has been stuck with him. But her spirit does not appear as the sweet girl Yuuta once knew. Instead, Rika manifests as a monstrous and powerful entity who fiercely protects him. Although unable to control Rika’s violent behaviour, Yuuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed that follows from her brutal vengeance. As a result, Yuuta is apprehended by “Jujutsu” sorcerers who protect the world from curses such as Rika.

Now a first-year at this new high school, Yuuta learns to battle evil curses and use the cursed energy for good. Alongside his new classmates Maki Zenin, a Jujutsu weapons expert; Toge Inumaki, a spellcaster who uses his words as weapons; and Panda, a seemingly walking and talking panda bear, Yuuta finally begins to find his place in the world and, for once, to feel comfortable with what he has been given.

However, as his training progresses, Yuuta learns that the dangers of the Jujutsu world go far beyond that of just wicked spirits.
