The first spot is still held by the last film in the Evangelion Rebuild series and a fellow nominee for the grand prize, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time, which made over $102.8 million in the Japanese Box Office.

It should be noted that the Shin Evangelion movie took over five weeks at the Box Office before it hit 7.5 Billion Yen. Although the pandemic might affect the overarching run of Jujutsu Kaisen 0, after the massive Box Office numbers for its first weekend, it has been said that the movie could even break the $110 million mark at the Japanese Box Office.

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 has seen 6,288,404 million admissions so far and currently has a rating of 4.1 on Filmarks.

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 is a prequel story to the original anime series that has sold a cumulative total of over 200,000 BD/DVD discs and has over 60 million copies in circulation.

The prequel story follows Yuuta Okkotsu, who is literally haunted by the ghosts of his past. Ever since his childhood friend Rika died in a traffic accident, her ghost has been stuck with him. But her spirit does not appear as the sweet girl Yuuta once knew. Instead, Rika manifests as a monstrous and powerful entity who fiercely protects him. Although unable to control Rika’s violent behaviour, Yuuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed that follows from her brutal vengeance. As a result, Yuuta is apprehended by “Jujutsu” sorcerers who protect the world from curses such as Rika.

But the world’s strongest sorcerer, Satoru Gojo, has different plans for him as he makes Yuuta join Jujutsu Tech and learn to control Rika in the process.

Now a first-year at this new high school, Yuuta learns to battle evil curses and use the cursed energy for good. Alongside his new classmates Maki Zenin, a Jujutsu weapons expert; Toge Inumaki, a spellcaster who uses his words as weapons; and Panda, a seemingly walking and talking panda bear, Yuuta finally begins to find his place in the world and, for once, to feel comfortable with what he has been given.

However, as his training progresses, Yuuta learns that the dangers of the Jujutsu world go far beyond that of just wicked spirits.
