Halfway through the year and 2022 has already been delightful for the anime community. We have been blessed with some truly remarkable sequels and brand-new adaptations, and we are only just getting started.

Most-Watched Anime of June 2022: Spy x Family

Two anime, in particular, have dominated the conversations this year in Japan. Demon Slayer Season 2, which unsurprisingly bossed broadcast television and every single streaming service for the first three months of the year, and SPY x FAMILY, which has been doing something similar for the last three months.

SPY x FAMILY has caught the eye of everyone, even the casual anime fans. The hype surrounding SPY x FAMILY has been insane, with the anime quickly becoming one of the biggest new anime to have come out in recent years. The series has been insanely popular not just in Japan but also globally.

SPY x FAMILY has taken over the anime community around the world. The anime wiped the floor with some of the stupendously popular sequels airing alongside it last season, like Kaguya-sama: Love is War Season 3 and The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2, and its dominance remained unchallenged in the Spring 2022 anime season.

Most-Watched Anime in Japan (June 2022): SPY x FAMILY on top for three consecutive months now.

SPY x FAMILY is currently the Most-Watched Anime and TV Show on Japanese Streaming and VOD Services. The anime has been on top for the last three consecutive months and has been leading amongst both the male and female demographics by a large margin.

The demographic breakdown further confirms that SPY x FAMILY was the Most-Watched TV Show of June 2022 on Streaming amongst teenagers and adults of every single age demographic, ranging from people in their 20s to the elderly audience of 60 years and older.

The series was also the Most-Watched Anime broadcast on Japanese television every week during the entirety of its first-cour run, drawing an average of more than 7.5 million viewers during its first cour, with Live+7 DVR figures. According to Video Research Ltd., approximately 5 million households tuned into SPY x FAMILY every week during the last three months.

Needless to say, no anime from the Spring season has even come closer to the kind of success SPY x FAMILY is enjoying and the popularity it has garnered.

Most-Watched Anime in Japan (June 2022): Ya Boy Kongming tops One Piece.

Detective Conan is still going strong and, just like SPY x FAMILY, has maintained its place for three consecutive months. After being in and out of the Top 5 during the start of the year, the anime hasn’t left the Top 2 ever since the release of the latest film in the franchise, Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween. All the previous 23 Detective Conan films have also been exclusively available to stream on Amazon Prime Video since the release of the film in theatres.

Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is also the highest-grossing film in Japan so far this year, making over 9.1 Billion Yen ($69 Million) at the Japanese Box Office since its release in April.

Kingdom has also stayed in the third spot. While not really being a generous adaptation to what is considered one of the greatest seinen manga of all time, the Kingdom anime continues to be immensely popular with every new season in Japan.

Ya Boy Kongming, which initially debuted in the 35th place and slowly rose up to popularity, entered the Top 10 for the first time in May. And to everyone’s delight, it has now even left One Piece behind, as the anime was the 4th Most-Watched TV Show for June 2022 in Japanese Streaming and SVOD Services.

The anime has received an outpouring amount of positive reactions and buzz on social media around Japan and among the global anime community as well.

Demon Slayer, which concluded its second season with the climax of the Entertainment District Arc in February, has finally put the brakes on as it is now towards the bottom of the first half of the list.

Demon Slayer is currently the 8th Most-Watched TV Show in Japanese Streaming.

Meanwhile, with the theatrical release of Dragon Ball Super: Super HeroDragon Ball has also made its way to the Top 10.

After being in the top half of the list for the first five months of the year, Attack on Titan has now fallen to the 11th spot.

Part 2 of Attack on Titan Season 4 ended on April 3rd with the 87th episode of the series. The anime is set to wrap up its run with a third and final part next year that will cover the remaining nine chapters of the manga series.

Meanwhile, Shin-chan anime series is still performing consistently, following the theatrical release of Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpuden. The anime is in the 15th spot on the list.

With nothing new on the horizon, Jujutsu Kaisen has fallen to the 17th place, while Doraemon takes the last spot on the list. The Rising of the Shield Hero Season 2 has fallen out of the Top 20 altogether now.
