Nielsen recently released its list for the Top 10 Most Popular TV Shows and Movies in Streaming from June 20th to June 26th, and Netflix has retained the crown with The Umbrella Academy edging out another Netflix sensation, Stranger Things, which was previously on the top spot.
The third and final season of The Umbrella Academy dropped on Netflix on June 22nd and was viewed for over 2.5 billion minutes during its debut week. It is noteworthy that while the majority of The Umbrella Academy’s audience was mostly of the age of 18 to 49 years, according to Nielsen, a striking 28% of viewers were older than 50.
Stranger Things, which topped the charts four times since the first batch of Season 4 episodes dropped, added 2.32 billion more minutes to its viewership this week and has now racked in over 21.8 billion viewing minutes in the U.S. during the first month of the release of the first seven episodes of Season 4 on Netflix.
Meanwhile, it was also a great week of streaming for Disney+, as it bore witness to two main attractions of the week, with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness finally arriving on the streaming platform and the final episode of Obi-Wan Kenobi also premiering on the streaming service.
The multimillion-dollar blockbuster, which racked in more than $411 million domestically and a total of $935 million at the global box office, found itself on the big mouse streaming platform after five weeks of exclusive theatrical release. The film starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Elizabeth Olsen is one of the most popular movies of the year and was viewed for over 1.43 billion minutes on Disney+ during its debut week.
The Star Wars spinoff Obi-Wan Kenobi was viewed over 860 million minutes during the week.
Sing 2 was also released on Netflix the same day Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness premiered on Disney+, and it also managed to pull a significant 1.2 billion minutes of viewership during the week.
The Boys was viewed for over 712 million minutes during the week it dropped one of its most anticipated episodes of the series, Herogasm.
The Boys Season 3 has managed to hit all the right notes and is better than it ever was. It manages to find the perfect balance between grotesque violence and dark humour with meaningful character development and acknowledgements. Antony Starr is the star of the show, but the addition of Jensen Ackles and his Soldier Boy brought the show into uncharted territories.
The series’ nuanced take on the superhero genre makes it the best among not only its genre but also one of the defining TV Shows of the year.
The third season of the beloved superhero show is hailed by many as the best one so far from the streamers and also currently has a score of 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The Boys was watched for over 3.39 billion minutes during the first four weeks of its release.
