James Gunn’s Superman is already flying high weeks ahead of release. Fandango reports that advance tickets for the film’s Amazon Prime Early Access screenings have become its biggest first-day seller of the year, outperforming all 2025 releases so far — including Fantastic Four: First Steps from Disney and Marvel Studios.
What makes this milestone even more impressive: these tickets weren’t free giveaways. Prime members had to purchase them through Fandango, underscoring genuine fan demand.
The exclusive early screenings will be held in select theaters on Monday, July 8 at 7 p.m. local time, three days before the film’s official nationwide and IMAX release on July 11.
According to Fandango’s 2025 Moviegoing Trends & Insight Study, Superman ranked among the most anticipated summer films of the year. The upcoming debut of Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor was also named one of the most anticipated new performances in a separate survey of over 9,000 ticket buyers.
While no official tracking numbers have been released yet — not even from The Quorum, which was recently acquired — industry chatter suggests Superman could be headed for a $100 million+ opening weekend.
The new film will be looking to match or surpass previous Superman box office highs. Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman opened to $166 million in 2016, a record for Easter weekend. His earlier Man of Steel (2013) earned $116.6 million, while Justice League bowed to $93.8 million.
So far in 2025, the biggest domestic opening belongs to another Warner Bros. title, A Minecraft Movie, which debuted with $162.7 million. On the superhero front, the current leader is Captain America: Brave New World, which opened to $88.8 million.
Still, the bar for modern comic book movies remains high. Deadpool & Wolverine, released last July, scored a staggering $211.4 million — the biggest R-rated debut ever.
With Superman soaring in early buzz and ticket sales, Warner Bros. and DC Studios may have their next blockbuster in the making.
