An anime opening often acts as a better and glorified trailer for an anime and is filled with stunning and catching visuals, badass character shots and a damn good chorus.

Every great anime is accompanied by an equally and sometimes an even better and recognizable opening theme song. Everybody has probably heard the Domestic Girlfriend Opening by Minami somewhere and yet nowhere near enough people probably know what that anime is about to begin with.

That’s the power of an anime opening. Thankfully 2021 was neither short of great anime nor fantastic anime openings.

Beastars is arguably one of the best titles that Netflix has to offer and Studio Orange has done a remarkable job with it. The show has delivered two splendid anime seasons so far and despite that, it is still so criminally underrated. However, we can somewhat make peace with the fact that the anime’s opening theme song on the other hand is getting all the love and praise it deserves.

Kaibutsu by YOASOBI had gotten universal praise throughout the year as it even made Time Magazine’s Top 10 Songs of 2021 list and was also the Most Popular Karaoke Song in Japan according to DAM Karaoke. The song also won the award for Best Anime Opening at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards last year.

Beastars Opening Song for its Second Season is the Most Popular Anime Opening of 2021 on Spotify with over 135 million streams.

It should be noted that while we first heard the song in December 2020 with the first broadcast of Season 4. The song was officially released on Spotify in January 2021.

The latest opening for Part 2 of Attack on Titan Season 4, The Rumbling, has already been streamed over 30 million times on Spotify within just a month of its release and will probably also be a contender for Best Anime Openings of 2022 next year.

And obviously, Jujutsu Kaisen is also on the list. The second opening theme of the anime titled ‘Vivid Vice’ by Who-ya Extended is currently fourth on the list and has been streamed over 39.3 million times.

SK8: The Infinity’s opening theme song Paradise by Rude-α is just as groovy and is one of the most visually appealing anime openings of the year. Paradise is 9th on the list, with over 17 million streams.

And even though both of My Hero Academia’s openings this year were criticised by the fans for lacking visual appeal, the songs themselves were actually really good. The first opening from My Hero Academia Season 5 “No. 1 by DISH” took the tenth spot with over 14.2 million streams.
