The movie’s opening day figures are only behind the cultural phenomenon that was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train, which grossed over $12 million on its opening day.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Train went on to make a whopping $44 million in the Japanese Box Office over the three-day weekend period as it saw 3.42 million admissions.

The third spot was previously held by the Makoto Shinkai film, Weathering with You, which made $15.6 million in its first weekend grossing over $134 million during its theatrical run. Frozen 2 still holds the second spot, making $30 million in its opening weekend in Japan.

The movie is currently predicted to make around $85-95 million at the domestic box office. Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 also has a good word of mouth going for it as it has a rating of 4.2 on Filmarks, and the movie could potentially hit the $100 million mark as well.

Currently, Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time is the biggest movie of 2021 in Japan, making over $92.7 million in the domestic Box Office. The movie was released on Monday, and despite that, it sold over 540,000 tickets for its opening day, grossing over $7.6 million.

Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 is a prequel story to the original anime series that has sold over 200,000 discs in home release and over 30 million copies in manga this year.

The prequel story follows Yuuta Okkotsu, who is literally haunted by the ghosts of his past. Ever since his childhood friend Rika died in a traffic accident, her ghost has been stuck with him. But her spirit does not appear as the sweet girl Yuuta once knew. Instead, Rika manifests as a monstrous and powerful entity who fiercely protects him. Although unable to control Rika’s violent behaviour, Yuuta is helpless to stop the bloodshed that follows from her brutal vengeance. As a result, Yuuta is apprehended by “Jujutsu” sorcerers who protect the world from curses such as Rika.

But the world’s strongest sorcerer, Satoru Gojo, has different plans for him as he makes Yuuta join Jujutsu Tech and learn to control Rika in the process.

Now a first-year at this new high school, Yuuta learns to battle evil curses and use the cursed energy for good. Alongside his new classmates Maki Zenin, a Jujutsu weapons expert; Toge Inumaki, a spellcaster who uses his words as weapons; and Panda, a seemingly walking and talking panda bear, Yuuta finally begins to find his place in the world and, for once, to feel comfortable with what he has been given. However, as his training progresses, Yuuta learns that the dangers of the Jujutsu world go far beyond that of just wicked spirits.
