2022 has been a bliss for the anime community. And the year is only just starting as we are yet to see the likes of Chainsaw Man, the return of Bleach, Mob Psycho 100 Season 3 and My Hero Academia Season 6, which will all be premiering in the Fall of this year. And these are only just some of the highly anticipated titles for the year amongst a stack of much-awaited new and returning anime coming out later this year.

We are not even halfway through the year, but the anime community has already been blessed by some truly remarkable sequels and brand-new adaptations.

From plenty of high-profile sequels such as Demon Slayer Season 2 and Attack on Titan Season 4 Part 2, which created a never before seen hype on social media amongst the anime community every week, to some fresh titles such as the record-shattering SPY x FAMILY, which has quickly become a fan-favourite and the wholesome rom-com My Dress-Up Darling, which had the anime community in its chokehold for the first three months of the year. 2022 has already been a great year for anime.Highest-Grossing Anime Movies 2022; The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie

The Quintessential Quintuplets recently concluded its story with a movie that was released in Japan last month, while That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime will be continuing its story on one that is going to be released this Fall.

Black Clover will also be coming out of hiatus with an anime movie continuation this year, while One Piece Film: Red, which will see the return of Shanks, is coming out in August. There is so much to be excited about if you are an anime fan, whether on the big screens or on your television. But today, we are looking at the anime movies that have already been released this year and their box office performances.

Highest-Grossing Anime Movies of 2022: Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is the Highest-Grossing film in Japan right now.

Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween is currently the highest-grossing film in Japan this year, making over 8.79 Billion Yen ($65.2 Million) at the Japanese Box Office since its release in April.

The film is directed by Susumu Mitsunaka (Haikyuu!!) and is the twenty-fifth instalment of the Case Closed film series.

It’s not really a surprise seeing Conan at the top spot, considering how much of a mainstream and household popularity this anime series has, with the TV anime racking millions of viewers every week as well. The previous movie in the franchise, Detective Conan: The Scarlet Bullet, made over 7.6 Billion Yen at the domestic box office and was the third biggest blockbuster of 2021 in Japan.

Highest-Grossing Anime Movies of 2022: Doraemon is the only other Anime title in the Top 10.

Highest-Grossing Anime Movies 2022: Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021

The latest Doraemon movie, Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021, is currently the Second-Highest Grossing Anime Movie of the year and is the only other anime movie in the Top 10 for overall box office gross this year so far.

Doraemon: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021 is the 41st theatrical entry in the beloved Doraemon franchise and was released in the Japanese theatres back in March. During its run at the Domestic Box Office, the film accumulated over 2.64 Billion Yen ($19.6 Million) and sold a total of over 2.2 million tickets.

Meanwhile, the latest Shin-chan movie, Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpūden, was released the week after Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween and is the 11th Highest-Grossing Film in Japan for the year. The 30th entry in the wildly popular Shin-chan series has made over 1.93 Billion Yen ($14.3 Million) so far at the domestic box office and is also the third highest-grossing anime movie of 2022 so far.

Crayon Shin-chan: Mononoke Ninja Chinpūden is directed by Masakazu Hashimoto (Appare-Ranman, Fullmetal Alchemist) and features Shinnosuke (Shin-chan), who finds himself in a ninja family, as he attempts to unravel the mystery of his birth and protect the future of the earth and the “tomorrow” of his family.

Highest-Grossing Anime Movies of 2022: The Quintessential Quintuplets Movie has made over $10 Million in Japan.

The Quintessential Quintuplets ended its run with a climax feature film that was released on May 20th in Japan. Within less than a month of its release, the film has made over 1.39 Billion Yen ($10.31 Million) at the Domestic Box Office. The movie has also sold more than 1 million tickets.

The Quintessential Quintuplets has been the biggest romantic comedy of recent years, with the manga completely dominating the rom-com genre until last year. Even though the final volume came out in April 2020, the manga series went on to sell more than 1.8 million copies in 2021.

Meanwhile, The second volume of Free! The Final Stroke was released in April and has made over 850 Million Yen ($6.3 Million) at the Japanese Box Office. The second volume, which serves as the finale of Kyoto Animation’s beloved sports series, has massively outperformed its predecessor, which only made 540 million yen at the Box Office during its run.

Both the movies mentioned above don’t have a US release date yet.
