Frieren Proves Its Staying Power With a Strong Season 2 Showing.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End has probably been the most anticipated returning anime of 2026, alongside Jujutsu Kaisen. The series returned for its Season 2 premiere last month with a massive audience on broadcast television. Episode 1 drew 6.44 million viewers in Japan and scored an individual rating of 5.2%, including Live+7-day DVR viewership, a strong showing even after the exceptional success of its debut season.

While Season 2’s viewership represents a roughly 25% drop from Season 1’s record-breaking 8.6 million viewers, that particular four-episode premiere benefited from a two-hour special on the primetime roadshow block. Season 1 did hold strong throughout its entire run, with the final episode recording a viewership of 8.2 million.

Frieren is Also the Second Most-Watched TV Show on Streaming.

Frieren is currently the Most-Watched Anime of the Season on broadcast television and is only behind Sazae-san in terms of overall anime viewership. The same week Frieren premiered, Sazae-san posted a 6% individual rating, with 7.42 million viewers tuning in to the long-running anime.

On streaming platforms across the country, the anime is currently the second-most-watched TV Show, only trailing Jujutsu Kaisen.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 Viewership

Kanehito Yamada and Tsukasa Abe’s manga already had both critical and commercial success in Japan prior to its anime adaptation, having even won big at the 25th annual Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize. But the anime turned the series into a mainstream success not just in Japan, where the manga sold 4.9 million copies during the fiscal year of 2024 and was the third-best-selling manga series of the year, but also around the globe. The anime went on to win multiple awards at Crunchyroll’s Anime Awards and became the highest-rated anime of all time on MyAnimeList.

Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2 will approximately cover chapters 61–80 of the manga and continue Frieren’s northern journey with Fern and Stark, likely focusing on the “Continued Northern Travels” and “Divine Revolte” arcs.
