‘Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle’ Overtakes ‘Lilo & Stitch’ Internationally, Becoming the First Non-Chinese Film in History to Outgross Every English-Language Title Globally in a Calendar Year

Sony and Crunchyroll’s anime juggernaut Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has continued its historic run at the global box office with the film’s release in China. The popular shonen epic opened strong in Mainland, pulling in an impressive $52.4 million haul during its opening weekend.

Distributed locally by Maoyan, the film is benefiting from exceptional word-of-mouth, even as geopolitical tensions between Beijing and Tokyo, amplified in Chinese state media, dominate headlines.

Infinity Castle held firmly in second place with an additional $15.6 million during its second weekend, raising its cumulative China total to $79.3 million.

Following its second weekend at the Chinese box office, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has now surpassed the international haul of $614 million from Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch, becoming the first non-Chinese film in history to outgross every English-language title internationally within a single calendar year, signaling a monumental achievement for anime and Japan on the world stage.

The film has grossed over $770 million worldwide, including $134 million from the US market and the remainder of $637 million from international territories.

Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle has been rewriting box office history ever since it was released in Japan in July. In North America, the film scored a record-breaking $70M debut weekend, including a monumental $33M opening day. During its first full week, Infinity Castle also became the highest-grossing anime film in US box office history, surpassing Pokémon: The First Movie, which had held the record for more than two decades with its $85.7 million total.

Tracking had suggested that Demon Slayer would open somewhere around $35 million to $40 million domestically, but the film’s opening defied expectations, surpassing Mugen Train’s $21.2M 2021 debut and Jujutsu Kaisen 0’s $18M in 2022.
