Jujutsu Kaisen has quickly become one of the biggest anime and manga series around Japan within just a year since the anime first premiered. And, in a recent announcement from Shueisha, it has been revealed that Jujutsu Kaisen manga series is going to reach 60 million copies in circulation with the release of its Volume 18 on December 25.
Jujutsu Kaisen was already a well-established manga within the Jump roster before it even had an anime adaptation as the series had about 10 million copies in circulation when the anime had just premiered. But with the pitch-perfect anime adaptation by MAPPA, the series’ popularity soared into new heights as the manga has now sold almost 35 million copies between the October of 2020 and now.
Jujutsu Kaisen Manga: Gojo vs Jogo was pivotal in the implosion of the series.
One of the pivotal points in the implosion of the sales for the manga series was the week of the broadcast of its seventh episode which featured the Gojo vs Jogo fight. The manga hit a new sales record the next week as the series sold more than a million copies within a week of the broadcast. By the end of the first core of the season (December 2020), the series had already reached 20 million copies in circulation.
Three weeks into the second cour of the anime, the manga had hit 30 million copies in circulation and by the end of the first season of Jujutsu Kaisen in March, the series managed to get to 40 million copies.
The first three months of the year were very significant for Jujutsu Kaisen as the manga sales had skyrocketed to a combined total of over 15 million copies between them. The series reached the milestone 50 million copies in circulation in June this year.
This massive success of the manga has landed Jujutsu Kaisen a huge first print of 2 million copies per volume since the 16th Volume by Shueisha. The latest volume of the manga sold more than 1 million copies within the first seven days.
To put it in a comparative perspective, My Hero Academia, which is a global phenomenon has around 55 million copies in circulation around the world with more than 15 million of which coming from all around the globe rather than Japan itself. My Hero Academia has released 32 volumes so far.
Black Clover has 16 million copies in circulation around the world with 30 volumes released so far. Hunter x Hunter, which is a Shonen classic has 78 million copies in circulation across Japan with 36 volumes.
While Demon Slayer has reached the status of a celebrated phenomenon across Japan with unprecedented success within just two years, Jujutsu Kaisen’s popularity is the closest thing to something like that and it will continue to grow when the movie comes out this Christmas.
The Jujutsu Kaisen manga’s circulation figure includes both print and digital copies, as well as copies not yet sold. The series is currently the Best-Selling Manga Series of this fiscal year within Oricon selling over 28 million copies.
This recent colossal success of Jujutsu Kaisen and Tokyo Revengers only seems like the start of bigger things to come for the medium as 2022 will see Chainsaw Man and Spy x Family get an anime adaptation with both the series having more than 11 million copies in circulation already.
Jujutsu Kaisen Volume 18 will be released on Christmas while the prequel movie, Jujutsu Kaisen 0, will come out the day before. A special edition for Volume 18 is slated to come out the same day which will feature special merchandise. The movie will also be available as a light novel.
