While casting for Wonder Woman has not yet begun, names like Adria Arjona and Melissa Barrera have been floated around as ideal choices for the Amazon warrior. Arjona, in particular, feels like the frontrunner. Given that James Gunn often prefers to work with actors he has previously collaborated with—or those within his circle—and has expressed interest in casting a person of color in the role.
She is also dating Gunn’s friend, Jason Momoa, who is set to play Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl film (talk about keeping it in the family?). Beyond that, Arjona has proven herself to be more than a capable leading presence, notably in Netflix’s Hit Man opposite Glen Powell and, more recently, in Disney’s Andor.
The first of these major projects, Superman—starring David Corenswet—is set to hit theaters on July 11, 2025, followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow in June 2026, featuring Milly Alcock. A Batman film inspired by Grant Morrison’s Batman and Son storyline is also in the works, though few updates have emerged recently. Until now, the status of Wonder Woman had remained unclear.
That changed in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, where James Gunn officially confirmed that a Wonder Woman movie is currently in development. “Wonder Woman’s a separate thing,” Gunn explained, referring to the already-announced Paradise Lost series for HBO/Max. “It’s slow moving, but it’s moving. We’re working on Wonder Woman. Wonder Woman is being written right now.”
The Paradise Lost series, announced in 2023 as part of the DCU’s “Gods and Monsters” phase, will explore the early history of Themyscira. Described by Gunn as “Game of Thrones with Westeros, but with all the inhabitants of Paradise Island,” the show promises political intrigue and mythological world-building. It’s currently still in development, with no creative team yet announced.
Meanwhile, the question of who will play Diana Prince in this new continuity remains unanswered. Gal Gadot famously portrayed the Amazonian warrior in Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017) and Wonder Woman 1984 (2020), as well as in Justice League, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash. However, plans for a third solo film with Gadot were scrapped after Gunn and Safran took the reins at DC Studios.
In a 2022 statement about the cancellation, Patty Jenkins shared her disappointment but expressed understanding. “It was my understanding there was nothing I could do to move anything forward at this time,” she said. “DC is obviously buried in changes they are having to make, so I understand these decisions are difficult right now.”
While Gunn hasn’t ruled out Gadot’s return, he confirmed that no new actress has been cast for the role. He also responded to Zaslav’s earlier remarks about the “big four” DC heroes. “I think that’s accurate, actually,” Gunn said. “I think he got that from something I said. I wouldn’t say only those four characters, but I would say that Superman, Batman, Supergirl, and Wonder Woman are incredibly important to us. Right now, I feel great about where two of those characters are, and we’re still figuring out the other two.”
With Superman leading the charge this summer and Supergirl and Paradise Lost in active development, the confirmation of a new Wonder Woman film helps round out the DCU’s foundation.
