As the Trump administration continues to lean on pop music to bolster its political messaging, artists across the spectrum have been pushed back loudly. Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Selena Gomez and others have all condemned the government’s repeated use of their songs without consent, often in service of hardline immigration policies and nationalist propaganda.
But one of the biggest names in music, Taylor Swift, has remained conspicuously silent. And for a growing segment of her fanbase who once celebrated her political awakening, that silence is starting to feel like complicity.
Earlier This Month Rodrigo Called Out Trump Administration’s ‘Racist, Hateful Propaganda’
Earlier this month, Olivia Rodrigo publicly rebuked the Trump administration after discovering her song All-American Bitch had been used in a Department of Homeland Security video urging undocumented immigrants to “self-deport.” The clip, shared by DHS and the official White House Instagram account, showcased ICE agents detaining people while Rodrigo’s music played over captions like “IF ICE FINDS YOU.”

Rodrigo quickly responded: “Don’t ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda.”
Her comment, later deleted from the government’s page, spread across social platforms, prompting Instagram to remove the audio entirely.
It wasn’t Rodrigo’s first confrontation with the administration, either. She had already spoken out against ICE raids in Los Angeles earlier this year, writing: “LA simply wouldn’t exist without immigrants… Treating hardworking community members with such little respect, empathy, and due process is awful.”
She is part of a long list of artists, from Beyoncé to the Rolling Stones, who have publicly challenged the Trump administration’s unauthorized use of their work.
Taylor Swift, Once Vocal, Now Silent
On the other hand, Taylor Swift has remained silent, even as the Trump administration has used multiple songs from her latest album The Life of a Showgirl in official White House and campaign videos.
One post set patriotic images to her single The Fate of Ophelia. Another used the lyric “this empire belongs to me” to celebrate Donald Trump. A third used Opalite in a tribute to Melania Trump’s so-called “Patriot of the Year” award.
And yet, from Swift? No statement. No cease-and-desist. Not even a vague note of disapproval.
The Silence Stands Out, Especially From Her
For an artist famously protective of her intellectual property, Swift’s silence is quite glaring. She has sued over unlicensed music use at theme parks, pursued Etsy sellers over lyric reproductions, and demanded retroactive songwriting credits from emerging artists (Rodrigo included).
And politically, she once framed speaking out as a moral obligation. Her documentary Miss Americana chronicled her decision to break her political silence in 2018, against her team’s advice — by endorsing Democratic candidates and criticizing the overturning of Roe v. Wade.
“I need to be on the right side of history,” she said.
But six years later, with the Trump administration using her music to sell its agenda, that fire seems to have dimmed.
Some celebrities argue that political commentary only fuels division. Jennifer Lawrence recently vowed to avoid speaking about Trump altogether. Others, like Beyoncé or Katy Perry, have also retreated from public political statements after endorsing Kamala Harris in 2024.
But what makes Swift’s silence different is the scale; her influence dwarfs nearly every other figure in pop culture. When she speaks, it moves millions. When she stays quiet, that too sends a message.
And her recent business decisions, releasing endless variants to block competitors from hitting No. 1, aligning her branding with traditional Americana aesthetics, and refusing to comment on ICE raids or global conflicts, have left some fans uneasy. A portion of her base has begun to voice a sentiment once unthinkable: Has Taylor Swift become politically neutral by design?
Rodrigo Shows What Accountability Looks Like
Olivia Rodrigo, 22, has far less power, far fewer resources, and far more to risk. Yet she didn’t hesitate to confront the administration directly. She called their actions what they were. She defended immigrant communities. She took a clear stand when it mattered.
And she wasn’t punished, instead, the administration scrambled to remove her music.
Her response underscores a truth many Swift fans are repeating: for the biggest pop star on the planet, silence isn’t safety. It’s a choice.
As Trump’s team continues to capitalize on her music and image, Taylor Swift’s refusal to address it becomes harder to rationalize. The young woman who once insisted she wanted to be “on the right side of history” now appears unwilling to even say which side she’s on.
If Rodrigo, with a fraction of the power and reach, can speak truth to power, then what does it mean that Swift won’t?
